THUNDERSTORMS could hit the Isle of Wight tomorrow (Thursday) and the Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy rain.

The 'be aware' warning is in force from 2pm to 11.50pm.There is also a weather warning for Friday from 12.10am to 7pm for heavy rain.

The Met Office said for Thursday's warning: "Slow-moving, thundery showers may lead to locally torrential downpours across the area, with the risk of frequent lightning."

The Met Office chief forecaster added: "Some locations could see 30-40mm rain in an hour and where this falls on urban areas or main roads it could cause disruption to transport and possibly to power.

"The main risk period is during the afternoon and early evening, though a few thunderstorms are likely to rumble on into the night."

For Friday the Met Office said: "Rain spreading from the west may turn locally very heavy and thundery from early Friday, with the risk of some torrential downpours very locally."
